art movement: German Expressionism

Neither should a ship rely on one small anchor, nor should life rest on a single hope.

To Epictetus, all external events are determined by fate, and are thus beyond our control, but we can accept whatever happens calmly and dispassionately. Individuals, however, are responsible for their own actions, which they can examine and control through rigorous self-discipline. Suffering arises from trying to control what is uncontrollable, or from neglecting what is within our power.

As I read about German Expressionism, what stayed with me most was not only the stark, blunt and expressive style, but also the prevailing desire amongst the artists of the school to express personal thoughts, experiences and feelings. I rarely directly talk about myself through my art, but thought this was a fitting time to do so. This image, quote, and description of Epictetus are all indicative of how I am currently training to become a better me.
